How Using Large Language Models Affects Your Brain

Researchers at MIT divided participants into three groups. One group used large language models, another used search engines, and the third relied solely on their brains without any tools. All three groups were asked to complete three sets of the same tasks. In a fourth test, the requirements were adjusted: the large language model group was not allowed to use any tools, while the group relying solely on the brain was permitted to use large language models. During the study, they used electroencephalography (EEG) to record the participants' brain activities. The results showed that the three groups of participants had significantly different neural connection patterns, reflecting the use of different cognitive strategies. Overall, the neural connections in the large language model group were the weakest in coupling, the neural network in the group relying solely on the brain was the strongest and most extensive, and the search engine group was in the middle. In the fourth test, the neural connections in the large language model group were weak, with insufficient engagement of the alpha and beta networks. In contrast, the neural connections in the group relying solely on the brain were still strong. The research highlights that using large language models may have adverse effects on the brain.
