Apple Brings Three Improvements to the Built-in Screenshot Function in iOS 26 System
iOS 26 makes three small but significant changes to the screenshot function. The upcoming software update will add a new "Screen Capture" menu under "General" in the "Settings" app. It contains some useful toggle buttons.
First of all, there is now a new HDR screenshot option. After selecting this format, when viewed on newer iPhone models and other supported devices, any HDR photos or videos in the screenshot will be displayed in full dynamic range HDR format.
Apple said that HDR screenshots use the HEIF image format. In addition, the SDR screenshot option is still available and can be saved as a PNG file.
Secondly, the CarPlay screenshot function can finally be selectively enabled. In iOS 18 and earlier versions, taking a screenshot with an iPhone connected to CarPlay would generate screenshots of both the iPhone and CarPlay simultaneously. However, starting from iOS 26, only the iPhone's screenshot will be taken by default. The CarPlay screenshot function must be enabled manually.
Thirdly, when you take a screenshot on an iPhone 15 Pro or later, you can now use the "Visual Intelligence" function to identify the content in the screenshot.
Apple has redesigned the screenshot interface of iOS 26, and now the "Visual Intelligence" option will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. The "Ask" function allows you to ask ChatGPT about the screenshot content; the "Image Search" function can display images similar to the screenshot content on Google Images, Etsy, and Pinterest. In addition, there is a "Highlight to Search" option that allows you to conduct an image search for specific objects in the screenshot.
If you want the screenshot to be displayed as a thumbnail in the lower left corner of the screen, just like in iOS 18 and earlier versions, you can turn off the full-screen preview in the new screen capture settings menu.
iOS 26 is currently in the testing phase, and the update is expected to be released in September.
