Tensions between OpenAI and Microsoft Intensify

The tensions between OpenAI and Microsoft are approaching a critical point. OpenAI hopes to weaken Microsoft's control over its AI products and computing resources and ensure that it approves its transformation into a for-profit company. Microsoft is OpenAI's largest investor, and its approval of OpenAI's transformation is crucial for the latter to raise more funds and go public. In recent weeks, OpenAI executives have talked about the so-called nuclear option: accusing Microsoft of anti-competitive behavior during their cooperation. This could mean seeking a review of the contract terms between the two parties by US federal regulators to look for possible antitrust violations. This move could threaten the six-year partnership between the two sides. Under the agreement between the two parties, Microsoft can use all of OpenAI's IP. But their products are now in a competitive relationship. Microsoft has launched the AI programming assistant GitHub Copilot, while OpenAI is acquiring Windsurf, a company that provides an AI programming assistant, and it doesn't want Microsoft to have access to Windsurf's intellectual property.
