Tensions between OpenAI and Microsoft Intensify, Potential Antitrust Complaint Looms, Key Cooperation at an Impasse
According to The Wall Street Journal, the conflicts between OpenAI and Microsoft have escalated on core issues such as their AI partnership and equity conversion. OpenAI hopes to reduce its high dependence on Microsoft's computing power and channels, and strive for Microsoft's approval to transform into a for-profit company. Otherwise, it will face a financing risk of $20 billion. However, Microsoft demands a larger stake in the new company and continues to exclusively enjoy OpenAI's technology. The two sides also have disputes over the acquisition of AI startup Windsurf and the ownership of IP.
Amid the negotiation deadlock, OpenAI's senior management has discussed whether to report Microsoft's anti-competitive behavior in the cooperation to regulatory authorities, seek contract review, or even launch a public opinion campaign. This "nuclear option" may threaten the six-year cooperation foundation between the two sides. Currently, Microsoft still enjoys the exclusive sales right of OpenAI software and the priority access right to technology, but the two sides have formed direct competition in AI products and the market. The two companies stated in a joint statement that their cooperation remains productive and expressed optimism about continued cooperation in the future.
