British Telecom plans to leverage artificial intelligence and increase the intensity of layoffs
BT Plans to Leverage AI and Intensify Job Cuts
Alison Kirkby, CEO of BT, said that advancements in the field of artificial intelligence could intensify the significant job cuts the telecoms operator is pushing forward. She also laid the groundwork for the possible future spin-off of the group's network division, Openreach. Kirkby said BT's plan to cut more than 40,000 jobs and reduce costs by £3 billion by the end of this decade "does not fully reflect the potential of AI." If AI presents new opportunities for BT to operate its business with fewer resources, then the company needs to adjust to remain competitive. "Depending on what we learn from AI... there may be an opportunity for BT to be smaller by the end of the decade," she said in an interview.
