Disney and NBC Sue Midjourney for Copyright Infringement

Disney and NBC Universal have filed an infringement lawsuit against Midjourney, a company that provides AI text-to-image generation services, in a Los Angeles district court. This is the first time that Hollywood giants have filed a legal lawsuit against a generative AI company. The two giants accuse Midjourney of training its models using countless copyright-protected works without permission and allowing users to create images featuring well-known characters, including Darth Vader, Minions, Elsa from "Frozen", Shrek, and Homer Simpson. The two companies said they once tried to resolve the issue privately, but Midjourney continued to release new versions, offering "higher-quality infringing images". Disney's general counsel described Midjourney's actions as "piracy", while NBC Universal called it "blatant infringement". The Hollywood giants did not sue the giants in the AI industry such as Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft, perhaps trying to obtain a precedent in court before targeting more powerful opponents.
