Chinese AI Companies Take Data Abroad for Training on Hard Drives

Early in March this year, four Chinese engineers flew from Beijing to Malaysia, each carrying a suitcase with 15 hard drives. These hard drives stored 80 TB of spreadsheets, images, and video clips, which were used to train an AI model. At a data center in Malaysia, the employer of these engineers rented around 300 servers equipped with high-performance NVIDIA AI chips. The plan was to train the AI model there and then bring it back to China. The Chinese AI development company had spent months preparing for this operation in Malaysia. Given that it might take months to transfer massive amounts of data via the internet, the engineers finally determined that traveling with physical hard drives containing the data was the most efficient solution. Before the trip, the company's engineers in China spent over eight weeks optimizing the dataset and adjusting the AI training program.
