The University of Tokyo and TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor foundry, announced on the 12th that they have established the "TSMC-UTokyo Laboratory" and put it into use. The laboratory is located within the facilities of the University of Tokyo in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, aiming to promote joint research and education in cutting-edge semiconductor development. This is the first time that TSMC has jointly established a laboratory with a university outside Taiwan region. Although the investment amount has not been announced, according to relevant sources, TSMC will invest $15 million within five years. J.K. Tzeng, the co-COO of TSMC, emphasized at a press conference that TSMC will closely cooperate with the University of Tokyo to jointly cultivate global semiconductor talents. Teruo Fujii, the president of the University of Tokyo, said when referring to the development of generative AI, etc., "We will enrich the education and teaching of semiconductor design to address the common issues of humanity."
