OpenAI's ChatGPT has suffered a crushing defeat in a chess match against the chess engine of the 1978 Atari 2600 game. This 46-year-old device, with a processing power of 0.3 MIPS, has a performance far lower than that of the iPhone 15 Pro (about 250,000 times lower). ChatGPT performed poorly even at the beginner level, even confusing the chess pieces and claiming that the pixelated chess piece icons were "too abstract." Nevertheless, AI has performed outstandingly in other games, such as DeepMind's conquest of Go in 2016 and StarCraft II in 2019.
