Musk's Neuralink Enables an ALS Patient to "Speak" Again
A case reposted by Musk on X today shows that Neuralink, his brain-computer interface company, is leveraging the technology of xAI, an artificial intelligence company, to help an ALS patient "speak" again. The patient is Bradford Smith, a writer from Arizona. Suffering from ALS, the nervous system that controls his muscles has degenerated, causing him to lose the ability to move and speak. In search of a cure, he had a cylindrical device about the size of five stacked coins implanted, becoming the world's third patient to receive a Neuralink brain-computer interface implant. Before Smith's condition worsened, he had recorded a large amount of his audio and video materials. Subsequently, together with his team, he used Grok, an AI application of xAI, to train an AI model combined with his personal voice. The model can complete his sentences and enable conversations in his own voice.
