World, a biometric authentication project founded by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, will be launched in the UK this week. The project uses a spherical eye scanning device called Orb to scan people's irises. It will be put into use in London this Thursday and is planned to be rolled out to several other major cities in the UK in the coming months, including Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Belfast and Glasgow. The project aims to use its Orb device to verify human identity to prevent fraudulent abuse of AI systems such as deepfakes. It works by scanning a person's face and iris and then generating a unique code to verify that the individual is human rather than AI. It is currently compatible with platforms such as Minecraft, Reddit and Discord.
