UK High Court Warns Lawyers: Heavy Penalties for Citing AI-Generated "Fake Judgments"
Recently, the High Court of England and Wales issued a warning, emphasizing that lawyers must strictly verify the sources of information when using generative artificial intelligence (such as ChatGPT) for legal research. The court pointed out that although AI tools can generate seemingly reasonable content, the judgments and legal provisions they cite often contain false or incorrect information. Lawyers must refer to authoritative materials and verify them before citing. Failure to fulfill the verification responsibility may result in severe consequences for lawyers, including public condemnation, fines, contempt of court proceedings, and even referral to the police.
Recently, there have been several cases in various countries where lawyers have been investigated for citing AI-generated "fake judgments". Many of the cited judgments either do not exist at all or are completely irrelevant to the claims.
