News Publishers Call Google Search's AI Mode 'Theft'
An industry association representing some of the largest news publishers in the US has lashed out at Google Search's newly expanded AI mode, which replaces traditional search results with a chatbot-like interface. The News Media Alliance said in a statement on Wednesday that the new feature truly "deprives" publishers of traffic and revenue. At Google I/O on Tuesday, the company announced it would expand the AI mode to all users in the US. When users enter a query, the AI mode provides an AI-generated response along with a list of relevant links. Danielle Coffey, CEO and president of the News Media Alliance, said, "Links are the last redeeming feature of search that drives traffic and revenue for publishers. Now Google is just taking content by force and using it without any return, which is the very definition of theft. The Department of Justice's remedies must address this issue to prevent one company from continuing to dominate the internet."
