OpenAI Teams up with Former Apple Chief Design Officer to Launch New Computing Hardware Next Year
On Wednesday local time, OpenAI announced that it will acquire io, an AI device startup co-founded by Jonathan Ive, the former chief design officer of Apple, in an all-stock deal with a valuation of nearly $6.5 billion. This is the largest acquisition by OpenAI to date and also marks the official kick-off of the "AI hardware war". Ive and Altman confirmed that their first batch of AI devices are planned to be launched in 2026. According to their introduction, the two started collaborating quietly two years ago, and then gradually realized that "to achieve the grand plan of developing, engineering, and mass-producing a new generation of product lines", a brand-new company must be established. OpenAI said in a statement that Ive will "fully assume the in-depth creative and design responsibilities of OpenAI and io", but Ive himself and the creative team LoveFrom will remain independent.
