Malaysia Quickly Withdraws Statement After Announcing Adoption of Huawei Chips
Malaysia announced on Monday that it would build the first artificial intelligence system powered by Huawei chips, but distanced itself from the statement just one day later. Zhang Nianqun, the deputy minister of the Malaysian Ministry of Communications, said in a speech on Monday that Malaysia would be the first to roll out unspecified models of Huawei "Ascend GPU-powered AI servers" nationwide. Zhang Nianqun said that Malaysia would deploy 3,000 major Huawei AI products by 2026, and Chinese start-up DeepSeek would also provide Malaysia with one of its AI models. The project quickly caught the attention of the White House, which is striving to prevent Beijing from dominating the foreign artificial intelligence market. Zhang Zhixian's office later said it would retract its remarks about Huawei without providing any explanation. It remains unclear whether the above project will proceed as originally planned.
