Windows will natively support MCP servers
Microsoft launched its Copilot Plus PC and Windows AI projects last year, and today it has taken another step forward by introducing the Local Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Windows and launching the Windows AI Foundry. Microsoft has planned the infrastructure for the future, envisioning a future where automated AI assistants can assist human partners in their work.
MCP is an open-source standard launched by Anthropic late last year and is often referred to as the "USB-C interface" for AI applications.
Just as USB-C can connect devices from different manufacturers to various peripherals, developers can use MCP to enable their AI applications or agents to quickly communicate with other applications, web services, and even parts of Windows. Microsoft's adoption of this protocol is a major step in its hope to reshape Windows to better adapt to a future world where AI agents can connect applications and services in new ways.
"We hope that Windows, as a platform, can evolve to a point where agents become part of the operating system workload, and agents become part of the ongoing interaction between customers and their applications and devices," said Pavan Davuluri, head of Windows.
The MCP registry on Windows will serve as a secure and trusted source for all MCP servers for artificial intelligence agents to access. "Agents can discover MCP servers installed on client devices through Windows' MCP registry, leverage their expertise, and provide meaningful value to end-users," Davuluri said. MCP servers can access the Windows file system, window management, or Windows' Linux subsystem, etc.
This MCP functionality also exposes Windows to various new attack methods from malicious attackers. In recent months, the security risks of MCP have been well documented, including warnings of potential token theft, server intrusion, and prompt injection attacks. Microsoft is well aware of the security risks of adopting MCP at such an early stage, so the company is currently only providing a preview version to some developers to help refine its feature set and ensure security comprehensively.
