🎬Actors union sues Epic Games over use of AI Darth Vader voice in "Fortnite"
The Hollywood actors union SAG-AFTRA has accused Epic Games of using an AI-generated Darth Vader voice in "Fortnite"'s Star Wars event, infringing on actors' rights. Epic Games obtained the right to use the voice from the family of the late actor James Earl Jones and trained the character's voice using the ElevenLabs and Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash models with archived clips. SAG-AFTRA believes that Epic Games failed to negotiate in good faith with the union, unilaterally changed employment terms, and used the AI-generated voice to replace the work of union members in "Fortnite". Currently, SAG-AFTRA has filed an unfair labor practice (ULP) complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). This complaint comes at a time when SAG-AFTRA is on strike against video game employers, aiming to secure "basic AI protections" and fair compensation for its members. The strike has been ongoing for nearly a year, and no agreement has been reached with video game companies yet.
