Lawmakers Warn Trump's Mideast Chip Deals Jeopardize National Security
US lawmakers urge the government to re-examine the new AI deals reached with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, saying that expanding the sale of AI chips to Middle Eastern countries could expose advanced technologies to China and Russia, and may also limit the supply of US companies. Companies like NVIDIA and AMD announced a series of deals during Trump's visit to the Middle East last week, opening the door for Gulf countries to purchase tens of thousands of advanced semiconductor chips. The US government is planning to revoke the regulations restricting these countries from accessing chips during the Biden administration. A group of Democratic senators led by Elizabeth Warren and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that these measures would endanger the national security and economic competitiveness of the US. In a letter to the US Commerce Secretary on Monday, they said, "These deals amount to a shocking rollback of a series of export control measures that have helped the US maintain its technological edge, ensure victory in the AI race, and prevent adversaries from obtaining our most sensitive technologies."
