Apple and Alibaba's AI Collaboration Raises Alarms in Washington
According to The New York Times, members of the government expressed concerns about Apple's cooperation with Alibaba to introduce AI features to iPhones in China.
When Apple launched Apple Intelligence, it reached an agreement with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its AI products. Since OpenAI cannot operate in China, Apple sought a local partner.
Recently, officials from the White House and the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party inquired about this deal. Reportedly, they have directly raised this issue with Apple executives and questioned what kind of commitments the company might have made under Chinese law.
Lawmakers and national security officials worry that any deal with Alibaba could strengthen China's artificial intelligence capabilities, especially if it gives the company access to user data or helps improve its models.
Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee, called the deal "extremely disturbing."
"The United States is in an AI race with China, and we just don't want American companies to help Chinese companies run faster," added Greg Allen, director of the Center for AI and Global Security at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Reportedly, U.S. officials have discussed behind the scenes adding Alibaba and other Chinese AI companies to a restricted list to ban their cooperation with U.S. companies. The Department of Defense and intelligence agencies are also said to be evaluating the company's links to the Chinese military.
Apple has not provided a timeline for the launch of Apple Intelligence in China. But time is running out. iPhone sales and overall revenue in China have been shrinking. With the next-generation iPhone expected to be launched in the fall, the outcome of this controversy could significantly impact Apple's positioning in one of its most important markets.
