Apple's AI Collaboration with Alibaba Draws Attention from the US Government
According to three people familiar with the matter, in recent months, White House and congressional officials have been reviewing Apple's plan to reach an agreement with Alibaba to use Alibaba's AI technology on iPhones in China. They are concerned that this deal could help a Chinese company enhance its AI capabilities, expand the reach of Chinese chatbots, and subject it to further influence from Beijing's laws regarding censorship and data sharing. White House officials and the House Select Committee on China have directly asked Apple executives about this deal, including the terms of the deal, what data Apple will share with Alibaba, and whether Apple will sign any legal commitments with Chinese regulators. During a meeting with the House committee in March, Apple executives were unable to answer most of the questions. The government has discussed whether Alibaba and other Chinese AI companies should be added to the list of those prohibited from doing business with US companies.
