American Professor's Lecture Notes Made with ChatGPT Full of Flaws, Student Demands $8,000 Tuition Refund
Ella Stapleton, a graduate of Northeastern University in the United States, filed a formal complaint with the school and demanded a full refund of the tuition for the course after discovering that her business professor, Rick Arrowood, used ChatGPT to assist in creating the lecture notes. While browsing through the lecture notes, Stapleton noticed obvious signs of AI generation, including the word "ChatGPT" in the references, spelling mistakes, and abnormal illustrations. She questioned the professor's failure to disclose the use of AI and expressed dissatisfaction with his teaching method.
After multiple rounds of meetings and discussions, Northeastern University ultimately rejected her refund request. Professor Arrowood admitted to using various AI tools, including ChatGPT, the Perplexity AI search engine, and the PPT generation platform Gamma, and said that he should check the content more carefully and be transparent about the use of AI. Northeastern University supports the reasonable use of AI and provides resources to support its application, but the policy stipulates that users must regularly check the accuracy and applicability of AI output and provide appropriate attribution.
