Study Finds ChatGPT Reduces Idea Diversity in Brainstorming

According to a study published this week in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, researchers at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania found that the AI chatbot ChatGPT can enhance individual creativity in brainstorming, but at the same time reduce the collective idea diversity. In a series of experiments, the researchers had participants complete creative challenges, with some allowed to use ChatGPT for assistance and some not. For example, the researchers asked participants to come up with ideas for reusing a tennis racket and a garden hose. Among the ideas proposed with ChatGPT's assistance, 20 involved sprinklers, while only 7 ideas proposed with web search assistance and 12 ideas proposed purely by humans without any assistance included sprinklers. The research results are basically consistent with a study previously published in the journal Science Advances, that is, AI-generated content tends to be homogenized.
