Chairman Wei Zhejia Says TSMC Intends to Increase Investment in the US
Semiconductor manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) held its first-quarter earnings conference call today. Wei Zhejia, the chairman and president of TSMC, said that the company intends to increase its investment in the US by hundreds of billions of dollars. This expanded investment includes the construction of three new wafer fabs, two advanced packaging plants, and one research and development center. It is estimated that after the project investment is in place, 30% of the advanced process capacity below 2 nanometers will be produced at the Arizona plant. Wei Zhejia emphasized that the demand for artificial intelligence in the US market is very strong, and the major customers include Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, and Broadcom. Therefore, TSMC must expand its production capacity to support the needs of these customers. Regarding cooperation with Intel Corporation, Wei Zhejia said that TSMC is currently not in any discussions with other companies regarding any joint ventures, technology licensing, or technology transfer and sharing.
