🇨🇳 Former NYPD Officer Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Tracking Man on Behalf of China
A former New York Police Department detective, Michael McMahon, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for acting as an unregistered foreign agent, stalking, and conspiracy. He was accused of participating in the Chinese government's "Fox Hunt" and "Sky Net" operations, which aimed to coerce a Chinese expatriate, Xu Jin, and his wife to return to China. Judge Pamela K. Chen criticized McMahon for his lack of empathy for the victims and noted that such crimes pose a threat to U.S. national security. Prosecutors had sought to sentence McMahon to nearly six years in prison, but defense lawyers argued that McMahon was unaware that his actions were on behalf of the Chinese government. This case is one of several recently tried in Brooklyn related to China's suppression of its citizens abroad.
