AMD Expects New Export Controls to Result in $800 Million Loss
AMD said that the U.S. government's license control requirements for exporting artificial intelligence chips to China and certain other countries could have a significant impact on its earnings. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday, AMD said it had completed a preliminary assessment of U.S. export controls on semiconductor products. The export controls apply to the company's MI308 product. The company expects to apply for a license, but there is no guarantee that it will be granted. AMD anticipates that the export controls could result in inventory, procurement, and related reserve charges of up to approximately $800 million. The newly implemented U.S. export controls have affected several chipmakers, including AMD's main rival NVIDIA. NVIDIA said on Tuesday that it would record approximately $5.5 billion in related charges in the first quarter of this fiscal year.
