Google Launches DolphinGemma AI to Help Interpret Dolphin Communication
For decades, understanding the clicks, whistles, and pulsed sounds of dolphins has been at the forefront of science. Today, on National Dolphin Day in the United States, Google, in collaboration with researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the field research team of the Wild Dolphin Project, announced progress on DolphinGemma: a foundational AI model trained to learn the structure of dolphin vocalizations and generate novel dolphin-like sound sequences. This approach pushes the boundaries of AI in the exploration of cross-species communication and expands potential connections with the marine world. While DolphinGemma was trained only on the sounds of Atlantic spotted dolphins, Google says it should be possible to fine-tune it for other cetacean species.
