Dorsey and Musk Hope to "Abolish All Intellectual Property Laws"

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter (now X) and Square (now Block), posted a brief message declaring that "all intellectual property laws should be abolished", sparking a weekend-long debate about intellectual property, patents, and copyrights.

Elon Musk, the current owner of X, quickly replied, "I agree."

It's unclear what exactly triggered these comments, but they come at a time when AI companies, including OpenAI (Musk is a co-founder, competitor of OpenAI, and is challenging it in court), are facing multiple lawsuits accusing them of copyright infringement in training their models.

Writer Lincoln Michel wrote, " Without intellectual property laws, Jack and Elon's companies wouldn't exist", adding, "They just hate artists."

Dorsey elaborated on his stance in a subsequent reply, writing that there are "better models to pay creators", while claiming that "the current model extracts too much from creators and only engages in rent-seeking."

Musk's response is at least consistent with his past remarks, such as when he told Jay Leno that "Patents are for the weak."

A decade ago, in a so-called "patent giveaway", he promised that Tesla would not enforce its patents against other companies that used them "in good faith." (The company later sued the Australian company Cap-XX over patents, but the company said it was a response to a lawsuit filed by Cap-XX against a Tesla subsidiary.)
