Founded in 2018, Nate promised to provide a "universal" checkout experience and had raised over $50 million from investors. Nate claimed that, thanks to AI, users of its app could shop on any e-commerce website with just one click. However, the US Department of Justice alleged that Nate actually relied heavily on hundreds of outsourced workers at a call center in the Philippines to manually complete these purchases. Although Nate acquired some AI technologies and hired data scientists, the actual automation rate of its app was actually 0%.
