Former OpenAI Employees Support Musk Against Restructuring Plan
On Friday, twelve former OpenAI employees supported Musk in an amicus curiae brief, opposing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's plan to restructure the company into a for-profit entity. These former employees, who were data scientists and technicians at OpenAI and worked there from 2018 to 2024, are represented by Lawrence Lessig, a Harvard Law professor and political activist. They advocate that the OpenAI non-profit organization should continue to hold the controlling stake. The brief states, "If the OpenAI non-profit organization agrees to change the company's structure and thus loses control, it would fundamentally violate its mission." OpenAI, on the other hand, argues that the new structure can still advance its charitable mission as the non-profit organization will hold a significant stake in the future for-profit entity. The for-profit entity will be a public benefit corporation, accountable not only to financial shareholders but also to the public.
