OpenAI is phasing out the GPT-4 model in ChatGPT
OpenAI announced in its changelog on Thursday that it will soon phase out the GPT-4 artificial intelligence model, which was launched more than two years ago, from ChatGPT. OpenAI said that as of April 30, 2025, GPT-4 will be "fully replaced" by GPT-4o, the current default model of ChatGPT. However, GPT-4 will still be available via OpenAI's API. The OpenAI changelog reads, "In head-to-head evaluations, GPT-4o consistently outperforms GPT-4 in areas such as writing, programming, and STEM. Recent upgrades have further enhanced GPT-4o's instruction-following, problem-solving, and conversational fluency, making it a natural successor to GPT-4." GPT-4 was launched in March 2023 and was applied to ChatGPT and the web version of the Copilot chatbot.
