OpenAI Doesn't Rule Out the Possibility of Helping the Department of Defense Develop AI Weapons
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, said he doesn't rule out the possibility of helping the US Pentagon develop new weapon platforms. Speaking at the Vanderbilt Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats Summit on Thursday, Altman said, "I would never say 'never' because the world can get really strange." However, Altman warned that he doesn't expect to develop such platforms for the US Pentagon "in the foreseeable future" unless it's a trade - off among very bad options. In a conversation with former NSA director and current OpenAI board member Paul Nakasone, he said, "I think most people in the world don't want AI to make weapons decisions." He said that, aside from national defense, the government also needs to put more effort into learning how to use and integrate AI tools.
