Google Gemini to Adopt Anthropic's MCP Protocol

Just weeks after OpenAI announced it would adopt the data system connection standard for AI models from its competitor Anthropic, Google quickly followed suit. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, announced in a post on the X platform on Wednesday that Google will add support for Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) to its Gemini model and SDK. Hassabis wrote, "MCP is a great protocol, and it is rapidly becoming an open standard in the era of AI agents. We look forward to working with the MCP team and other industry partners to further develop this protocol." The MCP protocol allows AI models to obtain data from data sources such as commercial tools and software to complete tasks, and can also extract data from content repositories and application development environments. This protocol enables developers to establish two-way connections between data sources and AI applications such as chatbots.
