Microsoft Fires Two Employees Who Protested at 50th Anniversary Celebration
Microsoft has fired two employees who protested the company's provision of artificial intelligence technology to the Israeli military at the company's 50th anniversary celebration. The protest took place last Friday when software engineer Ibtisam Abusalh took to the stage and shouted at Microsoft's Chief AI Officer Mustafa Suleyman: "You claim to care about using AI for good, but Microsoft sells AI weapons to the Israeli military. Fifty thousand people have died, and Microsoft is fueling this genocide in our region." The second protester was Microsoft employee Vanya Agrawal, who interrupted the latter part of the event. On Monday, Abusalh was invited to a video call with a Microsoft human resources representative and was told that she would be immediately fired. Agrawal had given the company two weeks' notice of her resignation on the 11th, but Microsoft informed her on Monday that "it has been decided to make your resignation effective immediately today."
