OpenAI Completes the Largest Private Equity Financing in History, with a Valuation of $300 Billion

OpenAI has raised $40 billion in a funding round led by SoftBank, bringing the company's valuation to $300 billion and setting a record for the largest financing of a private technology company. OpenAI will receive $10 billion immediately, with SoftBank investing $7.5 billion and the other $2.5 billion coming from an investment consortium. If the company does not officially convert to a for-profit organization by the end of the year, it could lose a quarter of the financing amount.

This financing comes just months after OpenAI announced a $500 billion AI data center project in partnership with SoftBank, Oracle, and the Abu Dhabi fund MGX. The company has experienced rapid growth recently, with CEO Sam Altman revealing that ChatGPT has 500 million weekly users. However, OpenAI does not expect to achieve profitability until 2029, by which time its revenue could reach $125 billion.
