Anthropic, an artificial intelligence research company, today announced the detailed plan for its next-generation large language model, Claude 4.0, through its developer blog. This upgrade will restructure the existing product line: the flagship Opus version will be discontinued, and the focus will be on a dual-version strategy of Sonnet (mid-range) and Haiku (lightweight). At the same time, visual understanding and generation capabilities will be introduced to the entire series for the first time. The new model is scheduled for an official release in the second quarter of 2025, and early testing channels have been opened to corporate partners.
Streamlining the Product Line
The flagship Opus version will be discontinued, while the Sonnet (mid-level) and Haiku (lightweight) versions will be retained. Elena Rodriguez, Anthropic's Chief Product Officer, explained: "The improved architectural efficiency of Claude 4.0 enables Sonnet to achieve 90% of the performance of the original Opus. Meanwhile, Haiku will obtain full Chain-of-Thought Reasoning capabilities for the first time."
Multimodal Breakthroughs across the Board
Visual Understanding (Vision): Claude 4.0 will support image/chart analysis, suitable for scenarios such as scientific research literature interpretation and engineering drawing analysis.
Basic Image Generation: Through cooperation with open-source models (suspected to be based on Claude's self-developed diffusion architecture), users can directly generate sketch-level images through text descriptions. Anthropic emphasizes that this feature "strictly adheres to security protocols."
Regarding pricing, the price of Sonnet remains unchanged, but the context window will be expanded to 500K for free. The price of Haiku is expected to be reduced by 50% (estimated at $0.5/million tokens), maintaining a low-price strategy to meet the needs of high-frequency calls.
Enhanced Compliance: A new "government/medical dedicated mode" has been added to support data isolation processing in compliance with regulations such as GDPR and HIPAA.
