OpenAI is about to complete a $40 billion financing led by SoftBank
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is on the verge of finalizing a new $40 billion financing round led by SoftBank. The report indicates that hedge funds such as Magnetar Capital, Coatue Management, Founders Fund, and Altimeter Capital Management are also in talks with OpenAI to participate in this round of financing, with Magnetar potentially investing $1 billion.
SoftBank will initially invest $7.5 billion, and another $2.5 billion will come from an investor consortium. The report adds that a second injection of funds is expected this year, at which time SoftBank will invest an additional $22.5 billion, and another $7.5 billion will be co-invested.
OpenAI's last financing round was in October 2024, a $6.6 billion round led by Thrive Capital, when its valuation was $157 billion. Bloomberg's latest report claims that this massive financing will push the company's valuation to a staggering $300 billion.
