OpenAI Adopts Anthropic's MCP Standard to Connect AI with Data

On March 26, 2025, OpenAI announced that it would adopt the Model Context Protocol (MCP) introduced by its competitor Anthropic. This open-source standard aims to help AI models connect to external data systems (such as business tools, software libraries), enabling them to generate more accurate and relevant responses.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that MCP support has been added to its Agents SDK and will soon be extended to the ChatGPT desktop app and Responses API. Anthropic welcomed OpenAI's participation and pointed out that MCP already has extensive integrations.
